Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge 2022 – August 27th – Bank Holiday Weekend
The Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge offers some of the best scenery in the country. Set in the beautiful Yorkshire Dales National Park, the 3 Peaks lie at the heart of an area of outstanding natural beauty and scientific interest. The Yorkshire Three Peaks offer a spectacular challenge, one that will rest in your memory for many years to come.
The Yorkshire three peaks challenge is a circular walk which encompasses three major peaks in the Yorkshire Dales, Pen-Y-Ghent, Whernside, and Ingleborough, arguably the best-known hills in the area.
Pen-y-Ghent
The smallest of the three peaks at 694m, its name means ‘hill on the border’ (Celtic) or ‘hill of the winds’ (Welsh). A steep ascent with views across the Dales, it can be exposed but the rocky terrain makes for an interesting challenge.
Whernside
At a height of 736m this is the highest of the Three Peaks with views of Morecombe Bay and the Irish Sea on a clear day. Although this is the highest of the 3 Peaks, the ascent is not as dramatic as the other two, a slow gradual climb, but the views and scenery along the way are stunning.
Ingleborough
With a height of 723m this is one of the most popular peaks for its dramatic steep side, flat top with picturesque views from all aspects. It once had a circular defensive wall around it built by the Brigantes to fight the Romans. Another steep ascent but it is over quickly with breath-taking views (weather permitting), then a gentle descent into Horton-in-Ribblesdale.
This is a tough challenge with over 1585m of ascent, 24.5 miles in distance, all to be accomplished within 12hrs, that means an average walking speed of 3.5km/hr considering short breaks and a lunch stop.
It offers a great opportunity to test yourself, a real sense of achievement, on conclusion it doesn’t matter how long it takes, it’s a day to make memories with friends that will be spoken about for years to come. All this whilst raising much needed funds to support research to help save babies lives nationally through the work of Professor Alexander Heazell and his team at the Tommy’s Rainbow Clinic and Research centre in Manchester !
